              THE IMPACTS OF SPACE WEATHER

What is space weather? Disturbances in space, in main those proceeding to enter the upper atmosphere reaching earth and the possible effects that can be delivered from such.

Although the probabilities are low a significant space weather event could cause widespread problems across the U.K , this concern is reflected in the official government U.K national risk register under the title 'Severe Space Weather' which highlights the effects of a major event.

Risk of geomagnetic storms to the grid

In relation to a major solar event the effects induced will not be such as that from an EMP (an intentional destructive electromagnetic impact) such a solar scenario will likely affect large ground based infrastructure, electrical grids, communication, GPS, satellite etc. The full ramifications can only be judged by looking at previous occurrences in modern times such as the Quebec blackout. So many variables involved to give a single definite synopsis.
