HEATING DURING GRID DOWN

Heating during a grid down scenario for us as bugging in includes gas and paraffin for shorter term events and logs for longer.

Consideration should be given to heating one room to save fuel, follow one room living where practically possible. Remember essential jobs in respect of heat saving / home insulation such as draught proofing, lined curtains and loft insulation.

During severe conditions wearing layered clothing including a hat indoors will be a great value to reduce your heat loss, store a few blankets to double your bedding at night and don't forget those hot water bottles.

Keep an eye on room temperature with a basic thermometer.

                             PARAFFIN HEATING
Here is our main paraffin heater.
Remember burning this fuel does release a considerable amount of water.

Here are our two smaller paraffin heaters.

GAS HEATING

Gives a good heat output, on the 1kw setting one bottle (16kg) will last about 200 hours heat. As with the paraffin heaters all dependant on amount of fuel stored but ideal for shorter term emergencies.

PLEASE TAKE CARE WITH FLAME AND ENSURE ADEQUATE VENTILATION. BE CARBON MONOXIDE AWARE !
                                THE FIRE

The log fire is our main emergency heat source while it doubles as a cooking source too.

Be aware of chimney smoke for reasons of stealth in the case of a longer term scenario should you live in a town or city

.     REMEMBER TO SWEEP YOUR CHIMNEY REGULAR
                                          SAFETY
Heat and carbon monoxide detectors, you can use a heat detector, safety rated commercial units are readily available.

in place of a smoke alarm near an open fire or anywhere where a smoke alarm is impractical.

Remember a carbon monoxide detector too.
                        PREPARE AHEAD
Goes for anything really however in the case of a log fire collect and store before winter sets in.
